Mukilteo Dentist- When Teeth Whitening Might Not Be Recommended

January 31, 2016 By HarbourPLaceDental

Advice from Mukilteo Dentist Dr. Onishi: Proceed with caution when choosing to whiten teeth.

http://www.HarbourPlaceDental.com

Mukilteo Dentist advises on Teeth WhiteningMukilteo Dentist, Dr. Onishi, has advice for people who are considering teeth whitening. Not everyone should get their teeth whitened, at least not without professional guidance from their dental expert.  Following are situations where teeth whitening may not be recommended.

1. Children under the age of 16
Young teeth may be more sensitive to the whitening process because of the larger pulps (nerve and blood vessels) in these teeth as compared to teeth of adults.  Introduction of peroxide into the pores in the enamel and dentin can create sensitivity of the nerves in the teeth.  If there is a concern about stained or discolored teeth in your child, seek the advice of your dentist.  There may be another treatment that is more effective and comfortable for the situation.

2. Nursing or pregnant moms
If you are expecting a child or presently lactating and feeding a baby, it is recommended that you wait to whiten your teeth.  Because there are no studies that have been done regarding the safety of bleaching during pregnancy or nursing, it is best to delay the treatment during this time.  Always consult your dentist first and wait for a suitable time to start your teeth whitening program

3. Individuals with sensitive teeth
If you are frequently experiencing sensitive teeth,  teeth whitening can increase that sensitivity. The best option is to have your dental practitioner prescribe a customized option for you so that you can whiten your teeth without additional pain. Use of desensitizers before and during treatment can be helpful.

4. Individuals with dental problems
If you have a history of dental problems such as receding gums, damaged enamel, exposed roots, and gum disease or many restorations like veneers, crowns and fillings, then you need to visit your dentist for an assessment before starting a teeth whitening program.  Your dentist can let you know what results you can expect with bleaching and what limitations there might be.

It is quite natural to want those ideal shining teeth for a bright and confident smile.  However prior to rushing out to the nearest drug store for teeth whitening kits, it is best to consult your dental team so that you can choose the safest and most effective method and product.

If you live in or around Mukilteo WA area do not hesitate to call  Mukilteo Dentists Dr. Onishi, Dr. Sarsfield and other experts at Harbour Place Dental who go above and beyond when it concerns helping their patients with ideal dental care and a perfect smile.  Call them at (425) 493-8111, or visit and contact them through their website  or by email: harbourpldental@gmail.com and ask them if at home teeth whitening is right for you and advice on reducing and/or coping with Teeth whitening sensitivity and after treatment care.

Home Whitening vs In-Office Treatments: Which is Better?

Home Whitening vs. In-Office Treatments: Which is Better? #Mukilteo WA Dentist

Teeth whitening Kit

One of the dilemmas most people face when they want to achieve a whiter smile is choosing between a do-it-yourself home whitening plan or a professional in-office treatment at the dentist’s. They often wonder which one is better so let’s look at the facts behind each option.

Strength:
• Home Whitening Treatments have an average of 3% peroxide levels so they require continual use over 2-4 weeks to achieve a whiter smile. Because of this, home treatments usually work best on mildly stained yellow teeth.

• Dentists have access to professional strength teeth whiteners with 15-43% peroxide levels meaning that you can have your teeth whiter in about 1 hour. In addition, dentist can use additional laser and light treatments that will zap out the worst of dark brown and grey stains.

Customization:
• Most home bleaching kits have a generic mouth piece as part of the whitening tray. Unfortunately this one size may not fit you very well since everyone has a different dental structure. This means that some of the bleaching agent could land on your gums and cause irritation.
• Your dentist can create a customized mouth piece just for you by taking an exact mold of your teeth. This provides a better fit and improves bleaching results

Protection:
• Home kits don’t usually come with protective products or tools so your gums and oral cavity is exposed to bleaching agents.
• With an in-office treatment, your dentist will apply a protective gel or install a rubber shield to protect your gums and oral cavity so that they don’t get affected by the bleaching agents

Cost:
• Home whitening kits are much more affordable, putting you back by no more than $50-60. They are definitely best for a gentle whitening plan but will not work for badly stained teeth.
• In-office treatments are more expensive with sessions costing $400-500. However they are the better option if you have very badly stained teeth that a home kit cannot get rid of.

Five Ways to Prevent Tooth Discoloration

June 1, 2015 By HarbourPLaceDental

photo_20Here are 5 simple daily habits that can help you prevent or greatly reduce the chances of discoloring your pearly whites.

1. Rinse Out
Get into the practice of rinsing out your mouth with clear water after drinking or eating. This practice will help dislodge any particles that would stain your teeth. It is especially important to rinse out after consuming dark colas, red wines, coffee, tea and processed foods.

2. Use a Straw
Using a straw to drink liquids is one of the ways to prevent your teeth from getting discolored. When we drink the normal way without straws, the liquid comes into contact with a larger surface area of our teeth, whilst when we drink through a straw that contact is minimized. This therefore reduces the chances of discoloring your teeth.

3. Raw Vegetables and Fruits
You have heard the saying- “an apple a day, keeps the doctor away.” Well you can bet that it also keeps the dentist away too. Fresh and crisp fruits and vegetables are like natural toothbrushes and help to clean your teeth and mouth. So have a few bites of an apple, celery, carrot or pear after your meals or snacks and reduce the chances of your teeth yellowing.

4. Dental Visits
Paying regular visits to your dentist at least once every 6 months is a great way to catch any dental problems such as tooth discoloration in their infancy before they become a bigger issue. Your dentist will be able to examine your teeth and help you get treatment early.

5. Basic Dental Hygiene
One of the reasons so many people suffer from teeth stains is because they don’t observe basic dental hygiene that could save them heartache and dollars down the road. You ought to be brushing your teeth in the correct manner at least twice a day. Flossing your teeth and using a whitening mouthwash daily provide extra oral health benefits and guarantee a white smile.

Following these tips will normally help in preventing or minimizing teeth discoloration. For more information or consultation please do not hesitate to contact your friendly neighborhood dentists at Harbour Place Dental Mukilteo WA (425-493-8111).

Common FAQ About Teeth Whitening

May 28, 2015 By HarbourPLaceDental

Closeup of dentist examining young woman's teeth

Closeup of dentist examining young woman’s teeth

How long will my teeth remain white after treatment?

If your teeth are properly whitened, you should be able to maintain a pearly white smile for about 1 year before considering going for another touch up. However, it is important to avoid the root causes of teeth discoloration by maintaining a healthy lifestyle. If you want you teeth to stay white longer, then cut back on coffee, tea, dark wines, colas and colored processed foods. And whenever you do partake of these, remember to rinse out your mouth immediately with water, brush your teeth or eat a crunchy fruit or vegetable like an apple, celery stick or carrot stick.

How much does it cost?

Well, teeth whitening can be both cheap and expensive. It all depends on your budget, the condition of your teeth and what kind of results you want to get. Home kits and products can cost from $6-40, while a visit to your dentist for a whitening treatment can cost about $400-500 per session. Home kits are cheap but the results take time to see, while a dental visit can get you a pearly white smile in less than an hour and successfully whiten even the worst of dark stained teeth.

What are the best products to use?

There are lots of whitening products on the market and it’s often confusing on what’s best. Basically look for well-known brand name products and find out what other consumers are saying about their experience with the product. If in doubt, consult your dentist who will advise you on the best products for your teeth.

Do I need to visit my dentist or can I whiten my teeth at home?

Either option is alright but in certain cases, a trip to the dentist will do you well. If you have had dental problems in the past or have fillings, veneers, crowns or braces, then you definitely need to consult your dentist. Also if you have very dark brown stains or your tooth appears to be gray, then home treatments will not whiten your teeth much and you will need in-office treatment. Finally, the dentist route is best if you want quick results, but if you have the patience to wait things out, you can do it at home.

Will teeth whitening treatments damage my teeth?

If used correctly, no. Tests have shown that the 10% peroxide level doesn’t damage your teeth enamel or any dental work such as fillings or crowns. The only effects are tooth sensitivity which usually disappears after a few days.

When will I see results?

If you use home whitening products then you should see results after 2-4 weeks. If you choose a professional treatment at your dentist’s office, your teeth should be whiter in 45minutes to 1 hour. However if your teeth are badly stained, you may need to attend another teeth whitening session.

Come to Harbour Place Dental in Mukilteo with your questions and concerns and we will be happy to give you our best evaluation and advice.

Are Teeth Whitening Kits Safe?

May 23, 2015 By HarbourPLaceDental

Overhead view of dental whitening trays and gel tubes on aged wood

Overhead view of dental whitening trays and gel tubes on aged wood

As with all commercially successful medical products, many people question whether teeth whitening kits are safe. Indeed, there have been questions such as:

• Have the national health authorities certified them as safe for human use?
• Do they have long-term risks such as cancer?
• Do they do your teeth more harm than good, stripping away the tooth enamel?
• Should they really be available to “uneducated” masses for home use or only used by licensed professionals?

Certification
The American Dental Association has approved a variety of professional bleaching products that are applied in-office by dentists or are dispensed by them for home-use. They don’t endorse over-the-counter bleaching products because the prefer people to seek professional advice for reasons of effectiveness and safety. However they have approved certain over-the-counter teeth whitening toothpastes. Though you may want to look out for products with the ADA seal, remember that just because a product does not have the seal, does not mean it is not safe or effective. This is because the process of manufacturers getting a seal from the ADA is voluntary.

With regards to the Federal Drug Administration (FDA) certification, teeth whiteners are not classified as drug so the FDA has no say in their regulation.

Teeth Whitening Safety Tips

  1. Do your research before purchasing a teeth whitening product. For example, look out for the ADA Seal of Acceptance; find out what other people are saying about the product in consumer groups, product reviews, testimonials etc. Try to look for objective information from a number of unbiased sources, instead of just the company’s marketing material.
  2. Consult Your Dentist– this is really the first step that can save you a lot of time and trouble in the long run. Your dentist can recommend the best treatment plan based on your dental history and even create customized solutions for you such as a made-to-fit mouth piece.
  3. Go with Trusted Brands– if you are in your local store and really want to purchase a teeth whitening product, stick to one from a trusted brand that has a long history in oral care and has a wide range of oral care products. You definitely don’t want to choose a product from a company no-one has ever heard about.
  4. Follow the Directions – to really be on the safe side, you want to follow the directions for use exactly as described in the instructions. In this way, you will achieve the desired results without any nasty consequences as compared to using short-cuts.

For any questions call us or make an appointment for a friendly consultation. At Harbour Place Dental in Mukilteo WA we will be very happy to discuss various options with you.

Three Tips To A Successful Teeth Whitening Program

May 21, 2015 By HarbourPLaceDental

Woman smiling with teeth close-upHere are 3 tips to ensure you have a successful teeth whitening program:

1. Consult a Dentist

The number one tip is to first consult your dentist before engaging in a treatment plan. Although it’s easy and cheap to use home whitening kits, a trip to the dentist could save you problems and money in the long run. He can:

  • Recommend the best DIY Whitening Kits
  • Advice you how to whiten your teeth if you have veneers, fillings and crowns.
  • Advice you if you need a professional in-office treatment, especially if you have dark stains or need immediate results
  • Treat any gum inflammation or tooth sensitivity issues that are a common problem with teeth whitening procedures.
  • He can prepare a special home-whitening kit just for you that have a custom-made tooth mold.

    2. Use Gentle Products

If you decide to use home whitening kits, then it is best to choose a gentle product. Even though they may take several weeks to take effect, you will have fewer problems with inflamed gums and sensitive teeth. In addition, use the products in the recommended manner. For example, if the instructions tell you to place the whitening strips on your teeth for 30 minutes just follow the directions and don’t think you will whiten your teeth better by leaving them on for 3 hours or overnight. The wrong application of these products will only leave you in pain and you will regret the experience.

        3. Avoid Overuse

It is easy to become obsessed with a whiter smile and continually use whitening products even after your teeth have changed color. If you have used a product and it has achieved its results within the recommended time frame, then stop using the product. Excessive use of teeth whiteners strips away the delicate tooth enamel and causes painful tooth sensitivity that makes eating or drinking hot or cold foods and drinks a nightmare.

If you have any questions call us or make an appointment for a friendly consultation. We will be very happy to discuss various options with you.

I haven’t been to dentist in awhile and this was the right place to start again. No judgements and staff is very friendly and helpful. Dr Onishi is a great dentist. She communicates what needs to be done in a very gentle manner. Which brings my stress level down considerably. It doesn’t hurt that her favorite color is purple!! Every time I speak with anyone from the office I always walk away thinking they are so nice. It’s very refreshing. It makes realize that’s not really the norm any longer. But going here gives me hope that it will come back!

The doctor and most of the staff are very nice but the scheduling gives inconsistent messages regarding cancellation policy and then sends threatening “you’ll get charged” letters under the guise of being nice and “not charging you this time”. I’d rather find another dentist that has less risk of spurious charges and consistent policies communicated regarding scheduling.

🎃 MONDAY DENTAL Q&A OF THE WEEK Q: Can chewing su 🎃 MONDAY DENTAL Q&A OF THE WEEK

Q: Can chewing sugar-free gum after Halloween candy actually help protect my teeth?

A: Yes — surprisingly, it can help.

When you chew sugar-free gum after eating, your mouth makes more saliva. That matters because saliva helps wash away food debris, dilute and neutralize acids produced by plaque bacteria, and carry minerals like calcium and phosphate that support enamel remineralization.

The American Dental Association says chewing sugar-free gum for about 20 minutes after eating can help prevent tooth decay. That makes it a handy little Halloween strategy after candy or dessert.

But there is one important catch: gum is an extra helper, not a replacement for your normal oral-care routine.

✅ Brush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste.
✅ Clean between your teeth every day.
✅ Try not to snack on candy continuously for hours.
✅ If you chew gum, choose sugar-free and look for the ADA Seal of Acceptance.

So yes — after enjoying your favorite Halloween treat, about 20 minutes of sugar-free gum can give your saliva a chance to do some helpful cleanup.

Are your teeth FUSED directly to your jawbone? 🤔

✨ THE ANSWER: NO!

Your natural teeth are supported by tiny connective-tissue fibers within the periodontal ligament (PDL). This tissue attaches the root surface to the surrounding tooth socket. But there’s more! 👀

Your periodontal ligament contains sensitive nerve endings that help you detect pressure when you bite and chew. That’s how your teeth communicate chewing forces to your nervous system.

Pretty remarkable for tissue you rarely think about!

🦷 FRIDAY DENTAL TIP: SIP SMARTER. PROTECT YOUR ENA 🦷 FRIDAY DENTAL TIP: SIP SMARTER. PROTECT YOUR ENAMEL! 💧

Think the only problem with a drink is its sugar content? Acidity matters, too—and so does how often you sip.

Acidic beverages can gradually wear away tooth enamel. The more often your teeth are exposed, the less time saliva has between exposures to help protect them.

✨ 5 SMALL HABITS FOR YOUR SMILE:

🥤 Have acidic drinks WITH meals instead of sipping for hours.
💧 Choose plain WATER between meals.
🚰 RINSE your mouth with water afterward.
🥤 SIP AND SWALLOW; don't swish acidic drinks. A straw can help limit contact.
🪥 WAIT about 1 HOUR before brushing after acidic foods or drinks.

You can still enjoy nutritious citrus fruit and tomatoes—pair them with meals rather than avoiding healthy foods entirely.

Continue the essentials: fluoride toothpaste twice a day, clean between teeth daily, and regular preventive dental care.

If your teeth have become sensitive or look different, ask your dentist about possible enamel erosion.

✨ MYTH vs. FACT: IS A FILLED TOOTH CAVITY-PROOF? 🦷 ✨ MYTH vs. FACT: IS A FILLED TOOTH CAVITY-PROOF? 🦷

You had a cavity treated and filled. Great! But can that tooth ever get another cavity?

❌ MYTH: A tooth with a filling can't decay again.

✅ FACT: The natural tooth around a filling can still develop a new cavity. It's called recurrent—or secondary—decay.

Think of a filling as a repair, not an invisible shield covering the entire tooth.

🔍 WHY CAN IT HAPPEN?
Plaque and bacteria still collect on teeth. Over time, the edges of a filling can experience wear or develop defects. If bacteria and acids affect the adjoining tooth structure, decay may occur there.

🪥 PROTECT YOUR RESTORATIONS:
✔ Brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste.
✔ Floss or clean between teeth daily.
✔ Cut down on frequent sugary snacks and drinks.
✔ Keep dental checkups appropriate for your oral-health needs.

Here's another important fact: An old filling doesn't necessarily need replacement. Your dentist can examine it and advise whether it's healthy, needs monitoring, or needs treatment.

Don't wait for pain to care for a filled tooth; early decay may not cause symptoms.

💜 Ask us to check your existing fillings at your next dental visit.

Healthy Smiles at Every Age
Tooth loss is not an inevitable part of growing older. Daily care and regular dental visits can help protect natural teeth for years.
5 senior smile habits:
1️⃣ Brush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste.
2️⃣ Clean between teeth daily with floss or another tool that works comfortably for you.
3️⃣ Speak up about dry mouth. Medications and health conditions can reduce saliva and increase your risk of cavities. Never change medication without speaking with the prescriber.
4️⃣ Adapt your routine. A powered toothbrush, enlarged handle, floss holder, interdental brush, or caregiver help can make care easier when hand strength or movement is limited.
5️⃣ Keep regular dental visits. Exams can identify decay, gum problems, worn dental work, and other changes before they become harder to manage.
Watch for persistent bleeding, loose teeth, new sensitivity, pain, swelling, sores that do not heal, or difficulty chewing or swallowing. These deserve professional assessment. Facial swelling with fever, trouble breathing, or trouble swallowing needs urgent attention.

DENTAL Q&A OF THE WEEK Why does food keep getting DENTAL Q&A OF THE WEEK

Why does food keep getting stuck between the same two teeth?

If one space catches food after nearly every meal, the reason may involve how the neighboring teeth touch, the shape of a tooth or restoration, tooth position, the bite, or the gum tissue between the teeth.

Dental food impaction has several possible causes, and the right solution depends on identifying the local reason. In other words, removing the food solves the immediate irritation—but it may not explain why that same space keeps trapping it.

What can you do now?

1. Remove the food gently with floss or an appropriate interdental cleaner.
2. Do not force sharp household objects between your teeth.
3. Clean between your teeth every day, using a tool and technique recommended for your mouth.
4. Tell your dentist if the problem keeps returning in the same spot.

Schedule an evaluation if the area is painful, swollen, bleeding, sensitive, difficult to clean, or connected with a loose or broken filling, an unpleasant taste, or a changed bite. Your dentist can examine the contact area, teeth, gums, and restorations and determine what is actually happening.

The important distinction: occasional food trapping can happen, but a repeated pattern in one location is useful information for your dental team.

Have you noticed a single trouble spot after meals?

Ask Harbour Place Dental about your oral health.

SUNDAY DENTAL FUN: TINY LIGAMENTS, BIG SUPPORT! Yo SUNDAY DENTAL FUN: TINY LIGAMENTS, BIG SUPPORT!
Your teeth have a support system you can't see in a smile selfie.
Natural teeth have a periodontal ligament: a network of connective-tissue fibers that helps attach each tooth root to its socket. It also helps cushion chewing forces. A miniature shock absorber is a useful way to picture its job!
Today's fact combines the American Dental Association's description of tooth anatomy with research on the ligament's cushioning role.
We often focus on the visible part of a tooth. Beneath the gumline, the roots and surrounding tissues help keep the tooth supported during everyday biting and chewing. Caring for a smile therefore includes more than keeping the visible surfaces clean.
Keep the daily basics steady:
Brush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste.
Clean between your teeth every day.
Follow the preventive-care schedule recommended for your needs.
Your dental team can help you find a comfortable cleaning method for the areas that are difficult to reach.
One important point: the shock-absorber comparison doesn't mean a loose tooth or pain when biting should be ignored. Ask your dentist to evaluate a concern instead of testing the tooth yourself.

👅 YOUR TONGUE NEEDS A LITTLE ATTENTION, TOO! Your 👅 YOUR TONGUE NEEDS A LITTLE ATTENTION, TOO!

Your toothbrush reaches your teeth every day. But your tongue can collect food debris and bacteria, too!

✨ This week's dental tip: If you enjoy the feeling of a cleaner tongue, try a gentle tongue-cleaning routine.

🪥 Use a soft toothbrush or tongue cleaner.

👅 Clean gently from back to front.

💧 Rinse your cleaning tool between passes.

❤️ Never scrub hard or continue if your tongue feels sore.

Tongue cleaning can be a helpful optional addition to your oral-care routine. It doesn't replace brushing twice daily, cleaning between teeth, or regular dental visits.

If you experience ongoing bad breath, a dental exam may help identify the cause.

Healthy habits don't have to be complicated. Small, gentle routines can make daily oral care more comfortable!

WHITENING TOOTHPASTE: MYTH OR FACT? 🦷✨ Does that w WHITENING TOOTHPASTE: MYTH OR FACT? 🦷✨
Does that whitening toothpaste really change the natural shade of your teeth?

❌ MYTH: Whitening toothpaste changes your natural tooth color.
✅ FACT: Most whitening toothpastes mainly remove stains on the OUTSIDE of teeth—not intrinsic tooth color.

☕ Coffee, tea, and other dark drinks can leave extrinsic stains.
🪥 Whitening toothpaste typically uses polishing and stain-removing ingredients to reduce surface discoloration.
✨ Bleaching products usually rely on peroxide chemistry to lighten natural tooth color.

A brighter-looking smile after brushing isn't necessarily the same as a change in your underlying tooth shade. Some toothpastes do contain low levels of peroxide, so ingredients matter.

Crowns, fillings, and veneers also won't bleach like natural teeth. If you have sensitivity or restorations, ask about your whitening options before starting.

We often think of stress as something that affects We often think of stress as something that affects our mood, sleep, or energy. But did you know that stress can also affect your teeth and jaw?

When life gets busy, some people unconsciously clench their teeth during the day or grind them while sleeping. This habit is called bruxism.

Occasional clenching may not cause significant problems, but frequent or forceful grinding can contribute to tooth wear, jaw discomfort, and headaches.

🔎 Signs worth noticing:
✅ Jaw tightness or soreness, especially in the morning
✅ Frequent headaches around the temples
✅ Tooth sensitivity without an obvious explanation
✅ Flattened, chipped, or worn teeth
✅ Catching yourself clenching while concentrating or feeling stressed

🌿 Five smile-friendly wellness habits:

Check your jaw during the day. When you're not chewing, allow your upper and lower teeth to rest apart.

Take brief relaxation breaks.

Practice slow breathing or another calming activity.

Maintain a consistent sleep routine.

Ask your dentist about persistent symptoms and whether a protective nightguard may be appropriate.

Remember, not every headache or sore jaw is caused by grinding. A professional evaluation can help identify what's happening.

At Harbour Place Dental, we believe caring for your smile is part of caring for your overall well-being.

Q&A OF THE WEEK 🦷 Why Do My Teeth Hurt When I Drin Q&A OF THE WEEK 🦷
Why Do My Teeth Hurt When I Drink Something Cold?
Ice water. A cold smoothie. One sudden twinge.
What is your tooth trying to tell you?
Cold sensitivity can develop when dentin—the layer beneath a tooth’s protective covering—becomes exposed. Temperature changes can affect its microscopic channels and trigger discomfort.
But the feeling alone cannot identify the cause. Worn enamel, receding gums, cavities, cracks or worn fillings may be involved. Whitening can also cause sensitivity.
YOUR NEXT STEPS
✓ Brush gently with a soft-bristled toothbrush.
✓ Keep brushing twice daily with fluoride toothpaste and cleaning between teeth daily.
✓ Ask whether a sensitivity toothpaste suits your needs.
✓ Call about new, persistent or worsening symptoms.
NOTICE THE PATTERN
One tooth or several?
A quick twinge or lingering pain?
Discomfort only with cold—or also with chewing?
Bring those details to your dental team. They are useful clues, but an examination is needed to understand what is happening.
You do not have to become your own tooth detective. Write down what you noticed and ask for an appointment. Bring the name of your toothpaste and mention recent whitening or dental work so the conversation starts with the right information.

🦷 DENTAL MYTH VS. FACT ❌ MYTH: “Sports drinks are 🦷 DENTAL MYTH VS. FACT
❌ MYTH: “Sports drinks are harmless for your teeth because they’re made for athletes.”
✅ FACT: Many sports drinks are acidic, and many contain added sugar. Frequent sipping can expose enamel to repeated acid attacks and may increase the risk of erosion and cavities.
That bright bottle may look like part of a healthy workout routine—but your teeth experience the drink differently.
Acids in beverages can soften and gradually wear away enamel. When sugar is present, bacteria in your mouth can also use it to produce acids that contribute to tooth decay. Repeated sipping keeps restarting that exposure.
💧 Protect your smile:
✔ Choose water for routine hydration whenever possible.
✔ Avoid nursing a sports drink over a long period.
✔ Rinse with water afterward.
✔ Don’t brush immediately after an acidic drink.
✔ Brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste and floss every day.
Sports drinks may be useful in certain prolonged or high-intensity exercise situations, but they aren’t automatically tooth-friendly just because they’re marketed to athletes.
Not sure whether your beverage habits could be contributing to sensitivity or enamel wear? Ask us at your next visit.

YOUR DENTAL HYGIENIST DOES MORE THAN CLEAN TEETH T YOUR DENTAL HYGIENIST DOES MORE THAN CLEAN TEETH
That smooth, freshly polished feeling is only one part of a hygiene appointment.
Dental hygienists are trained members of the oral-health team. Depending on state law, the practice, and your needs, they may review your health history, assess your teeth and gums, take measurements or images, document findings, and communicate important observations to the dentist.
They also provide preventive services and turn clinical information into practical home-care guidance.
Your hygienist may help you:
✓ Find areas your toothbrush routinely misses
✓ Improve brushing and interdental-cleaning technique
✓ Choose tools for implants, bridges, braces, sensitivity, or limited dexterity
✓ Understand how dry mouth, tobacco, diet, or medications may affect your mouth
✓ Know which changes should be discussed with the dentist
Why does that matter? Most oral care happens at home between appointments. Advice tailored to your mouth can be more useful than a generic checklist.
At your next visit, try asking: “What are you seeing, and what is the one change I should focus on first?”
Your dental hygienist is not simply cleaning your teeth. They assess, document, educate, support prevention, and help you build a home-care routine you can actually maintain.

🎃 MONDAY DENTAL Q&A OF THE WEEKQ: Can chewing sugar-free gum after Halloween candy actually help protect my teeth?A: Yes — it can help, and the reason is saliva.Halloween candy gives cavity-causing bacteria an easy source of fermentable carbohydrates. Those bacteria produce acids that can lower the pH around your teeth and contribute to enamel demineralization. Chewing sugar-free gum after you eat stimulates saliva flow, and saliva is one of your mouth’s natural defenses. The American Dental Association says chewing sugar-free gum for about 20 minutes after eating can help prevent tooth decay. The extra saliva helps wash away food debris, dilute and neutralize plaque acids, and bring calcium and phosphate back to the tooth surface to support remineralization. That does not make sugar-free gum a substitute for brushing. Think of it as a useful “after-treat helper.” Keep brushing twice a day with fluoride toothpaste, clean between your teeth daily, and enjoy Halloween candy in moderation rather than grazing on it all day.If you choose gum, look for a sugar-free product carrying the ADA Seal of Acceptance. So after the costume comes off and the candy bowl closes, 20 minutes of sugar-free gum may be a small step to help your smile recover from the Halloween sugar rush.Questions about cavities, enamel, or your family’s Halloween dental routine?
