Mukilteo Family Dentistry- All About Dental Cavities

Mukilteo Family Dentistry– Everything About Dental Cavities

dentist treat patient, extracted toothDental Cavities are also referred to as dental caries or tooth decay.  Dental caries can be a result of what we consume, how we take care of our teeth, and the absence of adequate fluoride in the water and toothpastes. If your household has a history of tooth decay, then you may be susceptible to getting decay, too. There are certain strains of bacteria that are involved in the dental decay process and the bacteria can be spread between family by sharing cups or utensils.

Grownups who experience a dry mouth are more susceptible to developing cavities, as they do not produce enough saliva in their mouth which naturally bathes the teeth and helps neutralize acid in the mouth. Dry mouth can be a side effect of medications, disease, and radiation treatment.

Cavities are a serious issue, and if left unattended, can lead to the structural damage of the tooth. This can likewise damage the pulpal nerve in the tooth also, leading to an abscess or infection in the tissues around the tooth. An abscess is extremely harmful because it can spread into tissues of the head and neck.  Without treatment, an abscess could even be life threatening.

If you visit your dental practitioner regularly, he/she will look for cavities. Without regular dental checkups from dental experts, it can be hard to realize that you have a cavity. Many cavities establish between the teeth or below the gumline and you might not know they exist.  They may only be evident in an x-ray of the teeth. If the cavity exists in the tooth where you can see it, evident by a dark spot on the tooth, you ought to make a visit to your dental professional right away.

What you eat and drink can have a significant effect on the amount of decay that develops. If you consume a great deal of sugary foods or drinks, such as soda,  you will be at a greater danger for cavities. Foods that are rich in sugar or starch are consumed by germs discovered in plaque, which will produce acids that penetrate teeth. This acid is really harmful to teeth, as it can erode the enamel or outer layer of tooth structure and expose the second layer where decay can spread quickly.  If you do not address this problem, the tooth can be damaged to the point that it cannot be saved.  The best way to prevent cavities or treat them before they become a big problem is to have regular check-ups and teeth cleanings with your dentist and practice healthy eating habits and daily home care as directed by your dental team.

It is important for your oral and general well being to have access to good dental care from a family dentist that you can trust and rely on.  The Mukilteo family practice of  Dr. Onishi, Dr. Sarsfield  and other dental experts at Harbour Place Dental are well regarded and trusted by many families in Mukilteo, Everett, Mill Creek WA area. Mukilteo Pediatric Dental Care: How to Choose the Right Toothbrush for Your Child

Mukilteo Pediatrics Tip for Right Tooth Brush for Your child

mother and daughter brush my teeth

While it may seem that purchasing a toothbrush for your child should be a relatively simple endeavor, the truth might be far from what you expect. A visit to the oral care section of any chain retailer might just have your head spinning with options. How do you choose the right toothbrush for your child? Here are some things to consider:

Brush head size. Children’s toothbrushes come in a variety of sizes, generally categorized into age ranges. For example, you may find one brand of toothbrush in a size 4 – 7 years and 8 – 12 years. While these age categories may be helpful when choosing the best fit for your child and are a great place to start, they are no substitute for common sense. For example, if your seven-year old boy stands head and shoulders above most children his age, then you may need to purchase the next size up.
Bristle softness: This is an extremely important factor in toothbrush selection as bristles that are too hard for your child’s gums can cause some very troublesome oral conditions, from gum erosion to infection. Generally speaking, most children should use a soft-bristled toothbrush. However, there are some exceptions to that rule, and your family’s pediatric dentist is the person who can give you the guidance you need in that regard.
Consider electric options: There are a number of fun and effective options on the market that can not only get children more engaged in the process of brushing their teeth, but can also help ensure that your children are getting the thorough brushing they need, each and every time. Explore options like sonic vibration, timing, and music in order to find what works best for your child.
Special considerations for infants and toddlers: Children who are teething have especially sensitive gums, and don’t necessarily need a traditional tooth-brushing. Look into super-soft bristled brushes made for baby’s gums, or skip brushing altogether and wipe new teeth and soft gums down with a cloth twice a day instead.

Oral health is an essential part of basic health care, and much better oral health routines begin in youth. It is vital that you care for your child’s oral health now, so that they can establish their own healthy dental practices as grownups. A necessary part of your children’s oral maintenance is finding a family practice or pediatric dental professional that you can depend on. The Mukilteo family dental practice of Dr. Onishi and Dr. Sarsfield is the one many households in Mukilteo WA, Everett WA, Mill Creek WA and surrounding areas depend on. The professionals at Harbour Place Dental in Mukilteo WA go above and beyond when it comes to providing  ideal oral health care to your young ones. Common FAQ About Teeth Whitening

How long will my teeth remain white after treatment?

If your teeth are properly whitened, you should be able to maintain a pearly white smile for about 1 year before considering going for another touch up. However, it is important to avoid the root causes of teeth discoloration by maintaining a healthy lifestyle. If you want you teeth to stay white longer, then cut back on coffee, tea, dark wines, colas and colored processed foods. And whenever you do partake of these, remember to rinse out your mouth immediately with water, brush your teeth or eat a crunchy fruit or vegetable like an apple, celery stick or carrot stick.

How much does it cost?

Well, teeth whitening can be both cheap and expensive. It all depends on your budget, the condition of your teeth and what kind of results you want to get. Home kits and products can cost from $6-40, while a visit to your dentist for a whitening treatment can cost about $400-500 per session. Home kits are cheap but the results take time to see, while a dental visit can get you a pearly white smile in less than an hour and successfully whiten even the worst of dark stained teeth.

What are the best products to use?

There are lots of whitening products on the market and it’s often confusing on what’s best. Basically look for well-known brand name products and find out what other consumers are saying about their experience with the product. If in doubt, consult your dentist who will advise you on the best products for your teeth.

Do I need to visit my dentist or can I whiten my teeth at home?

Either option is alright but in certain cases, a trip to the dentist will do you well. If you have had dental problems in the past or have fillings, veneers, crowns or braces, then you definitely need to consult your dentist. Also if you have very dark brown stains or your tooth appears to be gray, then home treatments will not whiten your teeth much and you will need in-office treatment. Finally, the dentist route is best if you want quick results, but if you have the patience to wait things out, you can do it at home.

Will teeth whitening treatments damage my teeth?

If used correctly, no. Tests have shown that the 10% peroxide level doesn’t damage your teeth enamel or any dental work such as fillings or crowns. The only effects are tooth sensitivity which usually disappears after a few days.

When will I see results?

If you use home whitening products then you should see results after 2-4 weeks. If you choose a professional treatment at your dentist’s office, your teeth should be whiter in 45minutes to 1 hour. However if your teeth are badly stained, you may need to attend another teeth whitening session.
