Mukilteo Pediatric Dentistry Tips on Brushing Teeth for Kids

Tips on Brushing Teeth for Kids:

When it comes to oral care at home, most kids rush through the all-important step of brushing teeth.  There is a right way and a wrong way to brush teeth, and your children’s oversights now can lead to some pretty unpleasant conditions down the line.  For that reason, it is important that you teach your children how to do a thorough job of brushing their own teeth.  Here are some tips on brushing teeth for kids:

What to use.  There are a variety of great children’s dental products on the market today, from vibrating toothbrushes to candy-flavored oral rinses.  It is a good idea to get a pediatric dentist’s recommendation when it comes to bristle strength, and then to let your children pick out what they like at the store.  Replace tooth brushes every three months.

When to brush.  Children should brush their teeth twice a day, at a minimum – more if they eat sticky, sugary sweets.  A good rule of thumb is to brush once a morning, after breakfast, and again at night, before going to bed.  However, any sugary snacking session is best followed up by a good tooth-brushing.

Time it.  Children should get into the habit of brushing their teeth for two straight minutes.  Consider using a bathroom timer, or even purchasing timing toothbrushes especially for children, in order to help children adhere to this important guideline.  Divide the two minutes into four parts: thirty seconds for the top teeth in the front, thirty seconds for the top teeth in the back, thirty seconds for the bottom teeth in the front, and thirty seconds for the bottom teeth in the back.

Don’t neglect other areas of the mouth.  After the two minutes it is a good idea to brush over the tongue and the roof of the mouth.  A thorough brushing of these often overlooked areas will help keep bad breath at bay, ward of plaque and gingivitis, and keep the mouth clean and germ-free.

Oral hygiene is an important part of overall health and well-being, and good oral hygiene habits begin in childhood.  It is important that you care for your children’s oral health now, so that they can develop their own healthy dental habits as adults.  An integral part of your children’s oral upkeep is finding a pediatric dentist you can trust.  For your Mukilteo Pediatric Dentistry needs, the professionals at Harbour Place Dental, Mukilteo WA will go above and beyond when it comes to helping your children maintain optimal oral health.  Give us a call us at (425) 493-8111, visit and contact us through our website www.HarbourPlaceDental.com  or contact us by email: harbourpldental@gmail.com

🦷 DENTAL Q&A OF THE WEEK

Q: Is brushing twice a day enough?

A: Brushing twice daily for two minutes with fluoride toothpaste is essential—but it is not the complete routine. Even a good toothbrush cannot fully clean the tight spaces between teeth, where plaque can remain.
